การออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมเพื่อสื่อความหมายโดยประยุกต์ใช้หลักการของวิชาสัญศาสตร์

Abstract

สถาปัตยกรรมนับเป็นงานศิลปะที่มีความแตกต่างและมีลักษณะเฉพาะตัวที่พิเศษกว่างานศิลปะประเภทอื่นๆ ความแตกต่างและลักษณะเฉพาะนั้นมีอยู่หลายประการแต่ที่ข้าพเจ้าสนใจและต้องการศึกษาในการทำวิทยานิพนธ์ของข้าพเจ้าก็คือ “การสื่อความหมาย” โดยผ่านงานสถาปัตยกรรมในฐานะที่เป็นเครื่องหมายชนิดหนึ่ง เป็นไปได้หรือไม่ว่างานสถาปัตยกรรมซึ่งโดยพื้นฐานถูกสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อตอบสนองประโยชน์ใช้สอย (Function) จะสามารถสื่อความหมายได้เหมือนงานศิลปะสาขาอื่นๆ ? ศาสตร์สาขาหนึ่งซึ่งศึกษาเกี่ยวกับเรื่องเครื่องหมายการสื่อความหมายก็คือ “สัญศาสตร์” (Semiotics) ดูจะป็นศาสตร์ที่น่าสนใจในการนำมาประยุกต์เพื่อค้นหาคำตอบนี้ วัตถุประสงค์ของการทำวิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้คือ การศึกษาค้นคว้าหลักการของวิชาสัญศาสตร์ เพื่อให้รู้ถึงระบบการสื่อความหมายกระบวนการสื่อความหมายกระบวนการสื่อความหมายและนำองค์ความรู้นี้ไปประยุกต์ใช้เพื่อสร้างระบบการสื่อความหมายของสถาปัตยกรรม และเพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์งานออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับความหมายในเชิงสัญศาสตร์เพื่อนำจุดเด่นและจุดด้อยที่พบงานสถาปัตยกรรมดังกล่าวไปปรับใช้ในงานออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมของวิทยานิพนธ์ ผลที่ได้จากการทำวิทยานิพนธ์พบว่า การออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมเพื่อสื่อความหมายโดยประยุกต์ใช้หลักการของวิชาสัญศาสตร์ทำให้ผลงานสถาปัตยกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นสามารถอธิบายถึงที่มาขององค์ประกอบในงานสถาปัตยกรรมนั้นได้มากกว่าเหตุผลด้านประโยชน์ใช้สอยและความงามและแม้จะสามารถสรุปได้ในระดับหนึ่งว่าเราสามารถที่จะคิดค้นระบบและวิธีการสื่อความหมายรวมถึงการสร้างรูปสัญญะของสถาปัตยกรรมเพื่อสื่อความหมายสัญญะได้ แต่การรับรู้และทำความเข้าใจความหมายผ่านรูปสัญญะของสถาปัตยกรรมก็ขึ้นอยู่กับประสบการณ์ของผู้ที่อ่านงานสถาปัตยกรรมนั้นๆด้วยเป็นสำคัญดังผลการวิเคราะห์ที่ได้จากการศึกษา ประเด็นสำคัญก็คือว่า ความหมายนั้นจะต้องมีอยู่ในรูปสัญญะของสถาปัตยกรรม ส่วนการจะรับรู้และทำความเข้าใจความหมายที่แฝงอยู่ในตัวงานสถาปัตยกรรมนั้นๆ ได้มากน้อยแค่ไหนก็ต้องขึ้นอยู่กับกระบวนการศึกษาค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลของผู้อ่านแต่ละคน แต่ถ้าหากความหมายนั้นไม่มีอยู่แล้วก็ย่อมไม่มีหนทางใดๆ ที่จะรับรู้และทำความเข้าใจงานสถาปัตยกรรมได้มากไปกว่าความสวยงามและประโยชน์ใช้สอย

Architecture is different from other kinds of art and has its own unique characters. Among those characters, what I’m interested and choose to study as the topic of my dissertation is its ability to “communicate” both denotation and connotation meanings when architecture acts as signs. Is it possible that architecture basically created to meet functions, can, like other kinds of art, communicate with users? It appears that the use of semiotics, which is a science of signs and communication meanings, is an appropriate way to find the answer. The objective of the dissertation is, firstly, to study semiotic framework in order to understand communication system and communication process, then use them to create architectural communication system. Secondly, semiotics will be employed analyze the hidden meanings of architectural design in order to obtain advantages and disadvantages, before adjusting them to the design of the dissertation. What I find from the study is that applying semiotics principles to architectural design helps to improve the outcome. Each component of architectural object has, besides functions and beauty, meanings and can convey their roots of thoughts. In designing communicating architecture, we can conclude, at a level, that we can create not only systems and ways to convey meanings, but also architectural features which carry signs. However, according to the case studies, it needs users’ experiences to perceive and understand the meanings. The point is architecture must convey perceiving meanings but how much the users can understand them depends on themselves. Anyhow, when there are on meanings in those architectural objects, there is nothing to appreciate other than aesthetics and functions.
