Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to study paleography and orthography of the Khmer scripts used in writing the Thai Language based on the primary data from the inscriptions in stones and on dried palm leaves and ancient Thai papers. The analysis is done by dividing the data according to Thai historical periods : Sukhothai period, Ayuthaya period and Ratanakosin period. The eras are indicated by the style and size of the inscriptions as well as the method of inscribing.
The result of this comprehensive comparison of the paleaography is the discovery that in each period the lines that form the letters differ considerably. In the Sukhothai period the lines are quite curved ; the letters are rounded. The lines in scripts of the Ayuthaya period are less curved than those of the Sukhothai period. In the Ratanakosin period, the lines are much less curved, with many lines that are either straight up and down or diagonal.
The Khmer orthography is generally the same as the Thai orthography in each period. The only difference is that there are consonants used in the khmer orthography do not appear in modern Thai. In the Thai language inscriptions of the Ayuthaya and Ratanakosin periods, subscript consonants are commonly used in the syllable – final position, whereas in those of the Sukothai period the final letters are sometimes written on the same line in full form of consonants.
