Abstract:
In the reign of King Jayavarman VII of Cambodia, the last Angkorian period of Khmer Art flourished, this was known as the Bayon style. Evidence of this particular period can be seen from Inscriptions referring to the relationship between Cambodia and the areas in Thai territory expecially the Northeast part of Thailand. These documents as well as other evidences found in the Northeast part of Thailand are inter-connected with each other. They may be divided into three categories.
1. Evidence from Inscriptions
The Ta Prom Inscription found in Cambodia describes the con-struction of 102 hospitals scaltered around the country. Other Inscriptions have been found during archaeological surveys giving information in accordance with the Ta Prom Inscription. These are inscriptions dedicated to these hospital, 7 inscriptions have been found in Thailand. Three of them were found in Archaeological sites. These inscriptions are greatly beneficia for the study of the forms of these archaeological sites as well as to determine their date as being in Bayon period.
2. Architectural Evidence
Apart from referring to the construction of the 102 hospitals in Ta Prom Inscription, Phra Khan Inscription also refers to 121 Dhamacalas (Les gites d’ etape) indicating that 17 of them were situated on the way from Angkor Thom to Pimai. A study of the Northeastern architectural styles reveals that three of the archaeological sites have the same architectural forms as the Dhamacalas in Combodia and not less than 18 of them are hospitals. Evidence from the inscriptions are also used for determining the forms of those monuments.
3. Sculptural Evidence
Most of the sculptures found in the northeastern part of Thailand were made according to Mahayana Buddhism which King Jayavarman VII practiced. Sculptures were found within the archaeological sites as well as in other places help todetermine the period of those sites. Most of these sculptures are clearly of Bayon style but sometimes receive the native influence.
The evidence found in the northeastern of Thailand are a vital statement of the cultural and political relationship with Cambodia in the reign of King Jayavarman VII.
