The purpose of this study was to analyze wooden ordination halls, popular vernacular architecture in the area around the upper western Gulf of Thailand, particularly in the three significant river basins: Tha Chin, Mae Klong, and Phetchaburi. The study focused on geographical and historical factors, building structure, architectural design and decorative art of 28 wooden ordination halls as a sample.

The findings indicated that these wooden ordination halls were built due to the limitation of coastal communities’ location and floodplain landscape. Soft and saline soil in the area resulted in the difficulty of common traditional Thai masonry-style construction in terms of subsidence of buildings as well as corrosion from air and soil salinity. The building structure of the wooden ordination halls was as simple as traditional Thai wooden houses in the central region of Thailand (Ruen Krueng Sab) and had some components from western-influenced wooden houses. The wooden ordination halls reflected the creativity of local craftsmen and became unique vernacular architecture.

In addition, the wooden ordination halls ranged in size from small to large. They were divided into five groups by roof patterns as follows: 1) The wooden ordination halls with a singled-tier roof and a porch 2) The wooden ordination halls with a singled-tier roof, a porch and a full-covered slanted awning 3) The traditional wooden ordination halls with a multi-tiered roof 4) The wooden ordination halls with a secondary-gabled roof and 5) The special wooden ordination halls. Furthermore, decorative art in different parts of the buildings was both simple and complicated. It was a combination of vernacular art and Bangkok-inspired fine art in the 24th-25th Buddhist century. The wooden ordination halls represented the prosperity and growth of the communities in the basins around the upper western Gulf of Thailand during the 24th-25th Buddhist century.;

Khwae Om canal is an ancient waterway which was believed to be the old Mae Klong River before it was changing the direction of the current river. It flows away from the main Mae Klong River at the Pak Bamru, a little below from Ratchaburi, then flows into the plain at Muang District and Wat Phleng District in Ratchaburi. After that the canal flows into the orchard areas at Bang Khonthi and Amphawa district in Samut Songkhram. And then connects to the Mae Klong River at Pak Nam Bang Kung, nearby Bang Chang, a little north of the city of Samut Songkhram. Along the Klong Khwae Om, it has been found the evidences since the late prehistoric period, continuing with the ancient city, Khu Bua, which is an important city during the Dvaravati period.

The study found that the artworks along the Khwae Om canal, after the Khmer culture, The oldest evidences can be dated around the 15th century or during the early Ayutthaya period, according to the Buddha images in U-Thong style (both the 2nd and 3rd generations) that were found. Therefore, it was believed that during this period, there should be a small community returning to settle down in Khwae Om canal and build the temples as the center of the community which have the vihara as the main building. In the middle of the Ayutthaya period, around the middle to late of the 16th century, it found that many temples were formally binding the boundary of ubosot. In the late Ayutthaya period, during the 18th-19th century, ubosots have become the main building of the temple, and semas have been built in the late Ayutthaya style, including the repair of the Buddha images may be the reflection of the wealth of the community before the 2nd fallen of Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1767.

In the Thonburi to early Rattanakosin period, around the 19th century, most of the evidences shown up the artistic character of the late Ayutthaya period. Therefore, it was believed that there were still the small community along the Khwae Om canal after the fallen of the kingdom. And then became stability during the 20th century the new inspiration from Bangkok that may be related to the transportation routes during that time;

<summary type="text">Tripitaka Hall in Lamphun Province : The Study of Art Style and Their Development;
The study of art styles and craftsmanship development of the Tripitaka Hall in Lamphun Province covers 84 sites in 8 districts. These Tripitaka halls were built by various ethnic groups who settled in the area from the 19th Century until present. The study used a comparative analysis of the art forms that appeared compiling with document data and other supporting evidence, including information from interviews with personnel in the area. The hypothesis of the study suggested that these ethnic groups have a way of life, society and culture of their own and respectful believing in Buddhism, the religious sites built therefore should clearly show the characteristics of the group. The goal of this thesis is to study such changes based on their relationship to ethnic groups and the period of construction.

The results of the study revealed that the art style of Tripitaka Hall in Lamphun Province is divided into 3 main groups, consisting of Tai Yuan craftsmen who are the indigenous people in the area. This group of craftsmen has evidence of the construction of the Tripitaka Hall since the 19th Century, namely the Tripitaka Hall of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai Woramahawihan, which was developed from the Tripitaka Hall of Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan in Chiang Mai Province and became a prototype for the Tripitaka Hall built in the 20th Century. The distinctive feature is a two-story half-timbered building, the upper level is a miniature of two porches vihara. The second group is Tai Yawng, an ethnic group who migrated from eastern Shan State, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. They came to Lamphun Province and settled in Pa Sang, Mueang Lamphun, Ban Hong and Mae Tha District during the year 1796 – 1813 AD. The distinguishing feature of Tripitaka Hall is a two-story cement building and a raised platform in both normal and shed roof which decorated in Tai Lue style roof ridges. The third is the Ban Hong craftsmen group. The Tripitaka Hall of this group built by the Tai Yuan and Tai Yong people who live together in Ban Hong District. The distinctive feature is the combination of the architecture of the temple building and the residence, such as the decoration of the gingerbread stencil which becomes unique in this area. In the part of the development of technicians divided according to the period of construction of the Tripitaka Hall into 3 periods. The first period was in the 19th Century, the Tripitaka Hall of the city temple was built by a group of Tai Yuan craftsmen. The second period was in 20th Century. It was a period of expansion as many as 50 Tripitaka Halls have built. Craftsmanship was develop into a local craftsmen group which specific styles of each area and began to be influenced by Burmese art, traditional Thai art and Western art. At the end of the 20thCentury, folk art was transformed into commercial art under the influence of stateist art. The art styles are modified according to the understanding and popularity of artisans in each area. The third period was after 1957 AD., the commercial Thai art has replaced folk art. Although there was a revival of the old artistic style according to the local trend during the year 1987 - 2006, but the style has been changed to focus on more extravagant decorative arts in buildings. This corresponds to the symbolic value of the Tripitaka Hall, which has changed its role from a building that stores the most important scriptures of Buddhism to the one component of the religious sites of the temple.;
