งานช่างฝีมือในยุคเหล็กของวัฒนธรรมโลงไม้บนพื้นที่สูงในอำเภอปางมะผ้า จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน

Abstract

วัฒนธรรมโลงไม้ มีอายุระหว่าง 2,600-1,000 ปีมาแล้ว เป็นตัวแทนของพิธีกรรมการฝังศพของชุมชนก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ในยุคโลหะสมัยเหล็กบนพื้นที่สูงในอำเภอปางมะผ้า จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน นอกจากนี้ยังพบกระจายในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่และกาญจนบุรี มีรูปแบบการปลงศพที่โดดเด่นแตกต่างจากภูมิภาคอื่นๆ กล่าวคือฝังศพครั้งที่ 1 และครั้งที่ 2 ภายในโลงไม้แล้วนำไปวางไว้ในถ้ำ หรือเพิงผา ไม่ได้ขุดหลุมฝังเช่นในที่อื่น คนในวัฒนธรรมนี้ให้ความสำคัญกับพิธีกรรมความตาย พบหลักฐานแสดงถึงการคัดเลือกไม้ การเตรียมไม้ การทำโลงไม้ การแกะสลักหัวโลงจำนวน 12 รูปแบบหลัก และการตกแต่งฟันของศพในโลงไม้ แสดงลักษณะเฉพาะนัยของช่างฝีมือที่มีความชำนาญสูงในสังคม

บทความนี้ นำเสนอ ก) แนวคิดการวิจัยเกี่ยวกับเรื่องรูปแบบองค์กรทางสังคม โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งสมาชิกสังคมที่เป็นช่างฝีมือ จากการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบข้ามวัฒนธรรมเพื่อเป็นนัยในการเชื่อมโยงกับหลักฐานทางโบราณคดี ข) องค์ความรู้เกี่ยวกับสังคมและวัฒนธรรมโลงไม้โดยสังเขปที่มีช่างฝีมือเป็นสามชิกสำคัญในการถ่ายทอดนัยทางวัฒนธรรมและสังคม และ ค) การสังเคราะห์ข้อมูลโบราณคดีจากงานวิจัยบนพื้นที่สูงในอำเภอปางมะผ้าเพื่ออธิบายในมิติทางสังคมของวัฒนธรรมโลงไม้

The log coffin culture in Pang Mapha dates ranging from 2,200-1,000 years ago, representing mortuary symbolism in the Iron age Highland population. These mortuary rituals are similar to those found in Chiang Mai and Kanchanaburi. The archaeological evidence revealed the unique feature of mortuary practice in comparison to other Iron age sites in Thailand, in particular, the primary and secondary burials were laid down in the log coffins instead of underground and the remains were intentionally placed inside the caves or at rockshelters. This implies the important of mortuary ritual in this particular culture as seen from the coffin making processes: tree selection and procurement, coffin preparation and manufacturing, crafting and decorating of coffin head and body. There are 12 styles of coffin head. The evidences of log coffins and decorated teeth implied the craft specialization already existed in these societies.

This paper attempts to present a) the concept framework of social typology and craft specialization using cross-cultural comparative studies to correlate archaeological record, and b) a brief survery of the body of knowledge of log coffin culture and c) the syntheses the archaeological evidencesfrom the research project in highland Pang Mapha in order to examine the social aspect of the log coffin culture on the craft specialization.
