สถานภาพและบทบาทของผู้หญิงและผู้ชายในอดีต : ภาพสะท้อนจากวรรณกรรมเรื่องขุนช้างขุนแผน

Abstract

การศึกษานี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาถึงสถานภาพและบทบาทของผู้หญิงและผู้ชายไทยในอดีต โดยการศึกษาจากวรรณกรรมเรื่องขุนช้างขุนแผน ซึ่งประพันธ์โดยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยและกวีราชสำนัก เนื่องจากวรรณกรรมเรื่องนี้มีลักษณะเด่นตรงที่ตัวละครเอกเป็นสามัญชนมิใช้กษัตริย์ แตกต่างไปจากวรรณกรรมเรื่องอื่น ๆ ในยุคสมัยนั้น ในการศึกษาวิเคราะห์ตัวละครโดยแบ่งตามเพศเป็นหลัก และแบ่งตามสถานะทางสังคมและความสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมของตัวละคร จากการศึกษาพบว่า ตัวละครเอกที่เป็นหญิงในเรื่องนี้เป็นภาพสะท้อนของผู้หญิงในกลุ่มชนชั้นผู้แกครองหรือกลุ่มขุนนาง ผู้หญิงในชนชั้นนี้ต้องอยู่ภายใต้ความคาดหวังทางสังคมในการสืบทอดสถานภาพทางสังคม ซึ่งแสดงออกในลักษณะของการผลิตซ้ำรูปแบบของผู้หญิงในอุดมคติ โดยมีกลไกแห่งอำนาจทางสังคมครอบงำพฤติกรรมทางสังคมของผู้หญิงชนชั้นนี้ การครอบงำแสดงออกในรูปของความสัมพันธ์เชิงอำนาจของคนต่างวัย คือ บิดา มารดาที่มีต่อลูก และความสัมพันธ์เชิงอำนาจของคนต่างเพศ คือ ผู้ชายที่มีต่อผู้หญิง ที่ปรากฏในค่านิยมของความสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมในการดำเนินวิถีชีวิตและในคติความเชื่อทางศาสนา ซึ่งลักษณะของผู้หญิงในอุดมคติแบบชนชั้นสูงนี้จะแตกต่างจากผู้หญิงชนชั้นล่าง เนื่องด้วยผู้หญิงชั้นล่างหรือผู้ถูกปกครองจะมีภาระและความรับผิดชอบทางสังคมที่เปิดโอกาสให้หญิงชนชั้นล่างมีสิทธิ มีอิสระ และมีอำนาจในการตัดสินใจมากกว่าผู้หญิงชนชั้นสูง ในส่วนของตัวละครชายที่เป็นกลุ่มชนชั้นผู้ปกครอง สังคมมีความคาดหวังต่อการดำรงสถานะทางสังคมเช่นเดียวกับผู้หญิง แต่กลไกแห่งอำนาจในการครอบคลุมพฤติกรรมทางสังคมของผู้ชายไม่มีลักษณะที่เคร่งครัดอย่างผู้หญิง เพราะบทบาททางสังคมของผู้ชายจะสัมพันธ์กับการทำกิจกรรมกับสังคมภายนอก คือ การเกี่ยวข้องกับรัฐ ทั้งในส่วนของการเป็นขุนนางและไพร่ ทั้งนี้ในกลุ่มไพร่ – ทาส กลไกอำนาจของรัฐจะครอบคลุมวิถีชีวิต ทำให้คนกลุ่มนี้ไม่มีอิสระและต้องอยู่ภายใต้อำนาจของรัฐและมูลนาย กล่าวโดยสรุปได้ว่า ลักษณะโครงสร้างทางสังคมที่แตกต่างกันของแต่ละชนชั้น เป็นปัจจัยต่อสถานะบทบาท และอำนาจของผู้หญิงและผู้ชายในสังคมไทยในอดึต

This purpose of this study is to study status and role of Siamese women and men in the past reflected in Khun Chang Khun Phan, written by the royal poets. This literature is different from others that the major characters are ordinary people not the king, which is different from other literature in the same period. This study analyze characters according to sex, social status and social role of the characters. From the studying, I found that : The major female characters reflect character of woman in noble class or ruler class. The women in this class has to behave under the expectation of people in the family and society which is a way to maintain their social status. This type of behavior is found repeatedly in female characters as an ideal women. Social rule has great influences on women in this class. The power that influences women can be seen from the relationship between older generation and younger generation such as parents have influence on their children. And men have power over women which is the value, the way of life and religious faith. This ideal type of woman in the noble class is different from the lower class, that women in lower class will have more opportunity to have right, freedom and power to make a decision more than noble woman. Male characters in the ruler class are also expected by people in the society as well. Men ; however, are not controlled as strict as women that is because the role of men both in the noble class and ordinary class often relate to the activities beyond their family such as the state. But ordinary people and slave, who live under the control by the state do not have much freedom and have to be under the control of the state or the control of the noble class. The difference of the structure of each social class could affect the status and role of women and men of Siamese society in the past.
