การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะศึกษาลักษณะที่ปรากฏอยู่ในจิตรกรรมฝาผนังภายในพระอุโบสถวัดวิหารเบิก จ.พัทลุง อย่างละเอียด วิเคราะห์ เปรียบเทียบแนวความคิดรูปแบบและเทคนิค เพื่อนำไปพิจารณาถึงการกำหนดอายุสมัยและลักษณะรูปแบบทางด้านศิลปกรรมของวัดวิหารเบิกแห่งนี้
จาการตรวจหลักฐานทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า
1. รูปแบบทางด้านสถาปัตยกรรม พิจารณาจากแผนผังของอุโบสถมีลักษณะแบบมีพะไลยกระดับพื้นทำทางเดินโดยรอบและลักษณะเสาทรงกลม บ่งบอกให้เห็นถึงงานช่างในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4
2. จิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่วัดวิหารเบิก น่าจะเขียนขึ้นโดยช่างฝีมือพื้นเมือง โดยได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากช่างกรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งมีภาพวิถีชีวิตทางภาคใต้สอดแทรกอยู่ และสอดคล้องกับหลักฐานทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ที่ระบุว่า ช่างพื้นเมืองชาวพัทลุงชื่อสุ่นเป็นผู้เขียนภาพภายในพระอุโบสถวัดวิหารเบิก โดยช่างพื้นเมืองที่ชื่อสุ่นขณะนั้นรับตำแหน่งหลวงเทพบัณฑิตประจำเมืองพัทลุง และเคยไปหักเขียนภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่กรุงเทพมหานคร
3. จิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่วัดวิหารเบิก กำหนดอายุได้ราวต้นสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 แสดงออกถึงความงดงามและความต่อเนื่องระหว่างงานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 และรัชกาลที่ 4 อาจสันนิษฐานได้ว่า เป็นช่างฝีมือที่สืบอายุลงมาจากรัชกาลที่ 3 จนถึงสมัยต้นสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 นั่นเอง
The purpose of this research is to study the appearance of the mural painting in the Ubosoth of Wat Viharnberg, Phatthalung Province. Moreover, this study aims to analyze and compare the concept, style as well as technique to identify the dating and the type of the mural painting of Wat Viharnberg.
According to the inspecting historical data and art history, the conclusions of this research are :
1. The architecture of Wat Viharnberg indicated the style of craftsman created in the reign of King Rama V, as considered from the plan of the Ubosoth which indludes porch, raised floor, pathway around the Ubosoth and round column.
2. The mural painting of Wat Viharnberg was assumed to be drawn by local painter influenced by painter from Bangkok as shown from the painting about way of life of southern people. It was concordant with historical evidence that there was a local painter named Soon who drew the mural painting of Wat Viharnberg. He was appointed as Luang Thep Bandit of Phatthalung and he had ever practiced the mural drawing in Bangkok, too.
3. The dating of the mural painting of Wat Viharnberg was estimated around the early period of King Rama V. It presented beauty and continuity of the mural painting between King Rama III and King Rama V. Besides, it was presumed that the mural painting of Wat Viharnberg was drawn by the craftsman during the reign of King Rama III to the early period of King Rama V.
