การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายในการศึกษาและตีความงานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังในอุโบสถวัดโพธิ์ปฐมาวาส จังหวัดสงขลา เพื่อให้ทราบถึงที่มา แนวความคิด และวัตถุประสงค์ในการเขียนภาพจิตรกรรม เนื่องจากจิตรกรรมฝาผนังวัดโพธิ์ปฐมาวาสมีแนวความคิดและการแสดงออกที่อยู่นอกกรอบแบบแผนประเพณีเดิม แตกต่างไปจากงานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังส่วนใหญ่ที่พบในภาคใต้สมัยต้นรัตนโกสินทร์
ในการศึกษาวิจัย สามารถสรุปผลได้ดังนี้
1. จิตรกรรมฝาผนังวัดโพธิ์ปฐมาวาสเน้นการเขียนภาพบันทึกเหตุการณ์ตามความเป็นจริงและปริศนาธรรม ซึ่งภาพเขียนเหล่านี้ได้สะท้อนแนวคิด ความเชื่อ สภาพสังคมและวัฒนธรรมของชุมชนสงขลาในขณะนั้น และการพยายามสร้างสรรค์งานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังในรูปแบบใหม่ ๆ โดยไม่ยึดติดกับแนวประเพณีเดิม ปัจจัยหลักที่ทำให้เกิดการเขียนงานจิตรกรรมในลักษณะดังกล่าวคือ การเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบและแนวความคิดในงานศิลปกรรมจากจิตรกรรมแบบประเพณีมาสู่จิตรกรรมแบบประยุกต์ตะวันตก และการรับเอาแนวพระราชนิยมในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 มาใช้ตามความประสงค์ของเจ้าพระยาวิเชียรคีรี (บุญสังข์ ณ สงขลา) โดยใช้วัดโพธิ์ปฐมาวาสเป็นแหล่งทดลองงาน อันเนื่องมาจากความเหมาะสมในหลายด้าน เช่น ตำแหน่งที่ตั้งและขนาดของวัด สภาพชุมชนที่อยู่รอบ ๆ วัด เป็นต้น
2. ปัจจัยทางด้านความหลากหลายทางเชื้อชาติศาสนาและสถานการณ์ทางการเมืองการปกครองในเมืองสงขลา คือเหตุผลอีกประการหนึ่งที่ทำให้เจ้าพระยาวิเชียรคีรี (บุญสังข์ ณ สงขลา) นำเรื่องราวของพิธีกรรมในศาสนาอื่น ๆ มาทดลองเขียนในงานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังวัดโพธิ์ปฐมาวาส เพราะนอกจากจะเป็นการบอกเล่าเรื่องราวชีวิตของคนในชุมชนที่แตกต่างกันในด้านประเพณีและวัฒนธรรมแล้ว ยังเป็นการแฝงจุดประสงค์ทางการเมืองการปกครองเพื่อลดความขัดแย้งทางเชื้อชาติศาสนา และเพิ่มความสมานฉันท์ภายในท้องถิ่นอีกด้วย
This thesis is aimed to search for the meanings of the mural paintings inside the ordination hall of Wat Pho Pathamawat, Songkhla Province. The research includes the concepts and purposes of the paintings in this hall. The researcher notices that both aspects of the murals in this building can not be found in their contemporary works in Southern Thailand.
The results of the research can be summarized as follow :
1. The main themes of the murals in this hall are real events and Dhrama riddles. Those works reflect thought, believes and traditions, all of which were popular in Songkla at that time. Moreover, the evidence showing painter’s creative and trying to be different from the tradition way of painting can be seen. The first factor resulting in this new style of painting is that the artisans began to apply the Western art styles to their works. The other one is the influence from the art style of the royal preference in the reign of King Rama IV. The latter factor was introduced by Chaopraya Wichiankiri (Boonsang Na Songkhla). He considered that this temple was suitable for trying this new style because of many factors, such as its location and surrounding community.
2. The researcher notices that the ceremonies from various religions are also painted inside this ordination hall. The portrayal of these themes should have been related to the variety of nationalities and religions in this area and also its political conditions. Chaopraya Wichiankiri might have thought that, apart from illustrating traditions and custom of people in various groups but same community, the selection of those themes for murals can be ease the nationality and religious conflicts.
