วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายสำคัญเพื่อศึกษาพัฒนาการทางวัฒนธรรมและบทบาทความสำคัญของชุมชนโบราณในจังหวัดพัทลุงก่อนพุทธศตวรรษที่ 24 ข้อมูลที่ใช้ในการศึกษาได้มาจากหลักฐานโบราณคดีประเภทต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ โบราณวัตถุ โบราณสถานที่พบจากการสำรวจแหล่งโบราณคดีในจังหวัดพัทลุง
ผลการศึกษาพบร่องรอยการอยู่อาศัยของชุมชนโบราณในจังหวัดพัทลุงซึ่งสามารถแบ่งพัฒนาการของชุมชนออกได้เป็น 3 สมัย คือ ชุมชนสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ยุคหินใหม่ (4,000-2,000 ปีมาแล้ว) มีลักษณะเป็นสังคมหาของป่า-ล่าสัตว์ ชุมชนสมัยประวัติศาสตร์ตอนต้น (พุทธศตวรรษที่ 13-18) พบว่าชุมชนโบราณในจังหวัดพัทลุงมีความสัมพันธ์กับชุมชนร่วมสมัยในวัฒนธรรมศรีวิชัย และวัฒนธรรมทวารวดี ต่อมาชุมชนสมัยประวัติศาสตร์ร่วมสมัยสุโขทัย-อยุธยา (พุทธศตวรรษที่ 19-ต้นพุทธศตวรรษที่ 24) พบว่ามีการอยู่อาศัยของชุมชนหนาแน่นขึ้น ช่วงเวลานี้ชุมชนอยู่ภายใต้อิทธิพลทางการเมืองของกรุงศรีอยุธยา
ส่วนบทบาทความสำคัญของชุมชนโบราณในจังหวัดพัทลุงพบว่าช่องก่อนพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 ชุมชนโบราณในจังหวัดพัทลุงมีฐานะเป็นชุมชนบริวารของเมืองสทิงพระมีหน้าที่จัดหาทรัพยากรธรรมชาติให้แก่เมืองสทิงพระตั้งแต่พุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 เป็นต้นมา ชุมชนโบราณในจังหวัดพัทลุงมีบทบาทสำคัญมากขึ้นในด้านเศรษฐกิจ ด้านการเมืองการปกครอง และด้านศาสนา
The purpose of this research is to study the cultural development and the important roles of ancient communities in Phatthalung Province prior to the mid 18th Century A.D. from archaeological evidence found in the area of Phatthalung Province.
Result of the research indicates that there are traces of ancient communities in Phatthalung Province which can be divided into 3 periods as follows :
1. The Prehistoric period (4,000-2,000 years ago). The communities during this period had the characteristic of a hunting-gathering society.
2. The Early historic period (8th – 13th Century A.D.). There was evidence of cultural relation with the contemporary communities such as the Srivijaya and the Dvaravati.
3. The Historic period (14th – 18th Century A.D.). communities during this period went under the political control of the Ayutthaya kingdom.
Regarding the role of these ancient communities, it is likely that before the 14th Century A.D. , they became vassal of Satingpra and provide natural resources to Satingpra. From the 14th Century A.D., these communities in Phatthalung Province had taken more important role in many aspects such as economic, politic, and religion.
